INSTALLATION and TESTING of MPI on LINUX CLUSTER




The selling point of the parallel processing is that it uses the power of multiple CPUs, so that it completes the execution of the program in less time than a sequential (single processor) calculation does.
The aim of the study is to install a version of MPI for Linux on a PC cluster.
 
 
 

A few definitions:

CLUSTER : Combination of several computers, which forms a so called shared memory parallel virtual machine. It can use PC (Linux) or stations (Unix).

MPI (Message Passing Interface) : Library which allows communications between the nodes of the cluster. MPI is for UNIX systems and MPICH or LAM are for LINUX environments.

NODE : A node is a particular processor of the parallel virtual machine.

SPEEDUP : The ratio of the one-CPU execution time to the n-CPU parallel execution time. It is the acceleration gained by using parallel computing.
