Numerical approach on drag 

reduction for automotive vehicles



    Because of increasing concerns about environmental issues, car manufacturers have to develop new systems to reduce CO2 emissions which are pointed out as being responsible for global warming.

A key issue consists in enhancing car aerodynamics with dynamic vortex control in order to reduce car drag coefficients. Computationnal Fluid Dynamics is used in this project to simulate the flow around the rear of the car.

Geometry with 300,000 cells was developped to perform 3D steady and unsteady simulations with StarCCM+ software. Results will be used to quantify the efficiency of the control system and to compare it when no controls are applied.
